Programs/Camp Pequossette/Employment

1. What programs does Watertown Recreation offer? 

Watertown Recreation offers a variety of programs for all ages, including sports leagues, fitness classes, youth and adult programs, seasonal camps, and special events. Check out our brochure for a full list of current programs.  

2. How do I register for a program? 

You can register for our programs online through the Registration Portal. You will need to create an account if you're a first-time user. For assistance, please contact our office.  

3. How do I create an online account for program registration? 
To create an online account: 

  • Visit the Registration Portal 
  • Select “Create Account” and fill in the required information, including your name, children’s names (if applicable), email address, and a password. 
  • Once registered, you can log in, search for programs, and complete your registration and/or your child’s registration. 
  • Please create only one login for your family.  

4. What should I do if I have a problem with the online registration system? 

If you experience issues with the online registration system, first check that your internet browser is up to date and try clearing your browser cache. If the problem persists, contact our office at 617-972-6494 or email recreation@watertown-ma.gov, and we’ll assist you. 

5. What is the cancellation policy for programs? 
Cancelled Program  

  • If insufficient enrollment causes an activity to be canceled, participants will have their choice to accept a full credit to their Recreation account or receive a refund check. 

Withdrawal from Program 

  • Participants who withdraw from a program at least 1 week prior to the start may receive a credit. 

  • Participants who withdraw from a program less than 1 week prior to the start of the program are not eligible for a credit, as program expenses (staffing, supplies, etc.) will have been incurred.  

 

6. What should I bring to a program or class? 

The required items for each program vary. For sports programs, we recommend bringing appropriate attire, water bottles, and any personal equipment such as racquets if specified. For special programs and/or fitness classes, we will provide a detailed list of materials or attire upon registration. Additionally, specific information including materials, equipment and attire will be noted in your welcome email.  

7. How do I know if a program is canceled due to weather? 


Weather-related cancellations will be posted on our website’s homepage, and notifications will be sent to all registered participants via text and/or email. You can also call 617-972-6494 for updates. Programs typically proceed rain or shine unless severe weather or unsafe conditions are present. 
 

8. Are there any age restrictions for Watertown Recreation programs? 


Yes, programs are typically divided into different age/grade categories which are defined in the program description and on the registration portal. 


9. Can non-residents participate in Watertown Recreation programs? 

Yes, non-residents are welcome to participate in most programs, but there may be a non-resident fee. Some programs may give preference to Watertown residents if space is limited. 
 

10. Can I sign up for a program after it has started? 

Late registrations may be permitted for programs if space permits. However, fees are not prorated. You will need to contact our office directly to see if the program can accommodate late sign-ups. 

11. Does Watertown Recreation have any accessible facilities or programs? 

We are committed to providing inclusive services. Many of our facilities and programs are ADA-compliant. If you have specific accessibility needs, please contact our office so we can ensure accommodations. Additionally, Watertown partners with Belmont-S.P.O.R.T- (Special Programs Organized for Recreation Time) to offer a variety of programs.

12. What is the process for applying to work for Watertown Recreation? 

  • For current seasonal job opportunities, visit the Employment Opportunities Page for openings and application information. 
  • All staff and volunteers working with for Watertown Recreation must complete a CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) and SORI (Sexual Offender Record Information) check. 
  • All seasonal staff must be certified with CPR and First Aid

13. How do I enroll in the Camp Pequossette summer program, and what are the requirements? 

Enrollment for Pequossette opens in February, prior to the camp start date in late June. You can register online through the Registration Portal. Please note that Pequossette fills quickly, and spaces are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Requirements include submitting a completed health form, permission form, approved pick-up form and the registration fee. 

14. Are scholarships or financial aid available for programs? 

Yes, Watertown Recreation offers financial assistance for the Pequossette Summer Camp program and the Buckingham, Browne & Nichols Summer Camp to residents who qualify. Please reach out to our office at 617-972-6494 for more information or to request an application.   

15. How do I stay updated on upcoming events and programs?

16. How can I get involved in planning or proposing new programs?

17. How do I donate to Watertown Recreation? 

Donations are greatly appreciated and help fund scholarships and community events. For information about donations, please contact the department at recreation@watertown-ma.gov.

Permits for Parks/Fields/Picnic Tables

1. How do I reserve a park or facility for a private event?* 

To reserve a park or facility, visit our Parks and Facilities page, where you can view available spaces, check availability and fill out a reservation request form.  Additionally, you can obtain this application by visiting the Watertown Recreation Department’s office. Your completed application must be submitted in person, via email, by fax, or by mail.  Please note that there is a 3-4 day turnaround for all permit applications.

2. What are the park rules and regulations? 


The general rules for Watertown parks include: 

  • Parks, without lights are open from dawn to dusk unless otherwise posted.* 
  • Open hours at parks with lights will vary based on permitting, usage and location.* 
  • Alcohol, smoking, and illegal substances are prohibited. 
  • Dogs must be on a leash at all times, unless at an authorized “dog park,” and owners must clean up after their pets. 
  • Organized activities require a permit.  
  • Check the Permits page for more details.  

*All park hours are subject to change based on weather conditions. 
 

3. When can I submit my permit application? 

  • Spring/Summer Permits: Applications are accepted January 1 for the upcoming spring/summer.  Permit applications are reviewed in the order that they are received.  

  • Fall/Winter Permits: Applications are accepted starting May 1 for the upcoming fall/winter.  Permit applications are reviewed in the order that they are received. 
     

4. How do I check the availability of fields, courts, or picnic areas before submitting an application? 

Please visit the facility calendar page to view field, court and picnic area availability.
 

5. How is field priority determined?  
Field use is prioritized as follows: 

  • City-sponsored activities (e.g., Watertown Schools and Recreation Department). 
  • Approved Watertown youth groups (e.g., Youth Soccer, Baseball, Football). 
  • Watertown-based organizations with 80%+ residency. 
  • Other organizations or groups with varying levels of Watertown residency  

6. What is the cost for using recreational facilities? 

Fees depend on the type of group and residency level. Please consult the permit application for Field/Courts or the permit application for Picnics for more details. 

7. What are the rules for facility use? 

  • A permit holder must always be present and carry the permit for verification. 
  • Permit holders are responsible for cleaning up, returning equipment, and ensuring participants behave appropriately. 
  • Use of alcohol, drugs, and smoking is strictly prohibited at all facilities. 
  • Groups are restricted to the designated area and time listed on the permit

8. What happens if I need to cancel my permit? 

A 72-hour cancellation period is required unless the cancellation is due to weather or other extenuating circumstances. Fees will not be refunded for "no-shows." In case of inclement weather, credits may be issued if requested in writing within five business days 

9. How do I make payments? 

Payments may be made by check payable to the City of Watertown or via a credit card on the Recreation Website.
